Barnaby Kalan is an independent
copywriter and creative consultant
with 25 years of experience in public
relations, advertising and direct
marketing. In his career, he has
created more than 456 direct marketing
programs for more than 84 blue chip
companies and agencies including:
Prior to establishing his freelance practice in 1993,
Barnaby was Creative Director at Blitz Direct &
Promotion in Toronto, a division of Cossette,
Canada's largest integrated marketing
communications agency. At Blitz, he was in charge
of a creative department of eight art directors,
copywriters and computer graphics specialists.

Barnaby has also been Vice-President, Associate
Creative Director at the Toronto office of
Wunderman Worldwide. His experience in direct
response and general advertising includes working
in New York City for N.W. Ayer Direct, J. Walter
Thompson Direct, and SSC&B: Lintas.

His work has won numerous distinctions in both
the United States and Canada, including awards
from the Art Director's Club of New York, the
Canadian Marketing Association (RSVPs), the Hotel
Sales and Marketing Association International
(HSMAI), and the Canadian Circulation
Management Council (ACE).

Barnaby's articles have appeared in INSIDE DIRECT
MAIL and Canadian Direct Marketing News. He also
served as a Senior Judge for the R.S.V.P. Awards
(Canada's largest marketing awards competition)
in 1994.

He has presented seminars on direct marketing
and copywriting at industry conferences
sponsored by the Canadian Marketing Association
(CMA), the U.S. Direct Marketing Association
(DMA), Canada Post Corporation, and the
Promotional Products Association of Canada
(PPAC). He was on the Advisory Committee for
Seneca College's Creative Advertising program,
where he taught their Introduction to Direct
Marketing course in 1999.

He holds a master's degree in Public Relations from
Boston University, and a bachelor's degree in
Journalism and English with honors from the
University of Massachusetts, where he was
elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Barnaby writes sales letters, direct mail packages,
print ads, brochures, articles, press releases, email
campaigns, Web copy and other marketing
materials that clients need to sell their products
and services more effectively. He also consults
with clients on direct marketing strategies and
lead generation campaigns.
